Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has urged all sectors of society, particularly those working in government, to steer clear of impolite or unsuitable remarks when making statements to the public. Speaking at a journalism dialogue course in Putrajaya on June 15, she emphasized that comments touching on sensitive matters of race, religion, and royalty—commonly referred to as 3R issues—should be avoided altogether.

"Everyone should practise restraint when speaking publicly and stay away from 3R issues, both during and outside election periods," Teo told the media after launching the 'Balancing Virality & Responsibility: Journalism Amid Speed, Trust & Impact – An Industry Dialogue' event. Her remarks come amid scrutiny of Department of Community Communications (J-KOM) director-general Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, who has drawn criticism over his use of unsuitable language since taking office.

Mohd Hisyamuddin commenced his role as J-KOM director-general on June 9, succeeding Datuk Ismail Yusop. Teo indicated that she has not yet had the opportunity to speak directly with the agency chief to share her guidance on the matter personally.

The deputy minister's comments reflect broader concerns about maintaining professional standards in government communications. Her emphasis on avoiding 3R sensitivities extends beyond election campaigns to encompass all official communications by the public sector.
