The judge overseeing the high-profile 1MDB trial has delivered a damaging assessment of former Prime Minister Najib Razak's conduct, finding that he demonstrated no remorse throughout the proceedings and consistently attempted to shift culpability to others.
In his judicial findings, the trial judge characterized Najib's behaviour as emblematic of someone who wielded his considerable authority to orchestrate what ranks among the globe's most significant instances of financial corruption and money laundering.
The judge's remarks underscore the court's view that Najib did not acknowledge his role in the scandal or express genuine contrition for the massive sums involved. Instead, the former leader repeatedly tried to deflect responsibility away from himself during the proceedings.
This assessment forms part of the judicial record in a case that has drawn international attention and scrutiny given the scale of the alleged misconduct and Najib's prominent position as Malaysia's top political office holder at the time the offences occurred.
