Police have arrested three individuals in Pekan following allegations that they were involved in a scheme to sell and forge medical leave certificates. The suspects, all in their 30s, were apprehended on June 15 after the District Health Office lodged a report on June 10. Among those detained are a mechanic, a workshop owner and a cleaner, who are suspected of acting as middlemen in the operation.
According to Pekan police chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin, the investigation began when the District Health Office received information from someone claiming to have purchased a medical certificate from a local individual. That person allegedly obtained the document from a government clinic in exchange for payment. The counterfeit certificates were being sold at prices ranging from RM50 to RM200 each.
A medical officer whose name was forged on the certificates has since confirmed he was transferred to another position in 2023. He also identified that the official stamp used on the documents was outdated and no longer in circulation. This discovery provided crucial evidence linking the certificates to forgery.
Police believe the operation was being conducted in a structured manner, with the arrested individuals responsible for recruiting clients and handling transactions. Authorities are actively searching for the primary suspect, believed to be a female civil servant employed at a clinic, who allegedly supplied the fraudulent certificates to the network.
The three detainees will appear before the Pekan Magistrate's Court on June 16 for a remand application. The case is being investigated under Sections 468 and 420 of the Penal Code, which cover forgery and cheating respectively.
